In 1999, a group of parents felt that Tipp City could support another Boy Scout Troop, one that would fit their thoughts and expectations and follow a program more suited to their idea of Scouting. In October of that same year, Troop 586 was granted a 16 month charter and sponsored by the Frank E. Robinson, American Legion Post 586. Starting with 6 young men, 3 committee members and a lot of enthusiasm, the adventure began. Since that time, the Troop has grown to 31 Scouts and 16 registered adults. Our Troop maintains an excellent retention rate and rank advancement. We have produced eight Eagle Scouts with several more set to finish either merit badges or projects to reach the rank of Eagle. Known as the "Road kill Boys", the Troop has experienced several different wild game meals and snacks. "You kill it, You eat it" is the philosophy of the leadership. This prevents needless or excessive taking of living things. It has also allowed the Scouts to sample such delicacies as crickets, moths, night crawlers, & grubs. In an effort to broaden their eating experience, turtle eggs were served for breakfast at a summer camp. Later that year, in the fall, turtle soup was introduced. The soup has become the traditional Winter Bushwhack camp-out staple. They do not readily share it with others. When asked to come up with a Troop mascot, the turtle on our logo was born. "Soup", as he is affectionately called, appears on most of the Troop's equipment and is becoming known throughout the Miami Valley Council. In 2000, Cub Scout Pack 285 was exploring the possibilities of reviving Boy Scout Troop 285. After months of discussion amongst themselves and the leadership of Troop 586, it was decided that it made sense to affiliate with Boy Scout Troop 586 both operationally and economically. In the short time we have together. the units have become close and enjoy interacting throughout the year. As Troop 586 looks to the future, steady membership growth and good times are anticipated. Troop 586 developed and maintains this website for a variety of reasons including: - Keeping our Scouts and Scouting families informed. The Internet provides the fastest way to communicate schedule changes, and late breaking news.
- Sharing our adventures with family, friends and the Scouting community.
- Letting our community and the world know about our Troop, its activities and objectives.
- Scouting offers something for our community's youth and gives back to the community through service projects. Most people aren't aware of this and we hope to add yet another way of communicating this through the Internet. And hey, we may even get lucky and recruit some new Scouts to our Troop!
We hope you enjoy your visit to virtual Troop 586! |
